Who Wants Some Pizza Pizza Bowl?

August 3, 2009
by Tom Fornelli

pizzapizzaYou know there are a ton of bowl games these days, and plenty of them have incredibly idiotic names thanks to their corporate sponsors.  Beauties like the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl and the newly monikered Konica Minolta Gator Bowl — rolls right off the tongue! — are the kind of things we’re having to deal with these days.

Still, there’s one game that is poised to take the top spot of dumbest bowl names ever.

Like many things in Detroit these days, the Motor City Bowl is having some trouble finding some financial backers for their annual game at Ford Field.  So they’ve decided to look around outside the usual suspects — like the San Diego County Credit Union — and it appears they’re working on a deal with Little Caesar’s.  Are you ready for the Pizza Pizza Bowl?

Ford and Little Caesars are talking to bowl officials about sponsorship. Former sponsors General Motors and Chrysler have dropped out as they deal with bankruptcy.

Little Caesars’ decision likely will be made after the Motor City Bowl makes its presentation to the company’s board of directors next week. Ford’s decision should be made within 30 days, according to the bowl’s executive director, Ken Hoffman.

Unfortunately the article goes on to crush my hopes and dreams a few paragraphs later.

The name Perles mentioned to WWJ — the “Little Caesars Pizza, Pizza Bowl” — is highly unlikely, considering the company no longer uses that slogan in its U.S. advertising.

So it’s more likely that if this deal does go through it’ll only be called the Little Ceasars Bowl, which is nowhere near as fun a name as the Pizza Pizza Bowl.

As for why we’re even writing about this here at Blog Ten, I can’t blame you if you’re confused.  You probably didn’t realize that the conference has a contract with the Motor City Bowl that runs through 2009 because in the game’s 12-year history Big Ten schools have only played in the game twice — Purdue in 2007 and Northwestern in 2003.

Just be grateful IHOP doesn’t sponsor one. Imagine the “Rooty Tooty Fresh and Fruity Bowl…”
