Big Ten Blows Away Hopes Of Vuvuzela Game

Facebook may be big enough to convince Saturday Night Live to let Betty White host, but there are actually people out there who like Betty White.  The fact is that old women saying dirty things is never going to not be funny, so it just makes sense.  What Facebook is not big enough to do, however, is push across somebody’s Vuvuzela agenda.

Unlike Betty White, nobody likes vuvuzelas.  I don’t even think the people of South Africa like the things, they’re just blowing them constantly to make sure the French don’t come back.  They’re just very loud, and incredibly annoying.  So I, for one, am extremely grateful to the Big Ten for squashing the hopes of one man who was trying to start a vuvuzela campaign on Facebook.

Dustin Stinson attends Ohio State and he came up with the idea of creating a group for “Vuvuzela Day for Penn State” group on Facebook.  The idea being to get everybody in the group to attend the game, bring a vuvuzela, and annoy the hell out of you for three and a half hours.

The Big Ten then saved the day by reminding us of some of their rules.  Everybody’s favorite person in the world, Spencer Hall of Everyday Should Be Saturday, contacted Scott Chipman of the Big Ten this morning about the story, and got this reply.

The Big Ten has specific policies that do not allow irritants or noisemakers, so vuvuzelas would not be allowed. Below is the specific language from our football game management manual.

A. Nonpermissible Items – The arena management is responsible for enforcing the Big Ten policies in this regard. The following items may not be brought into the arena by patrons: Alcoholic beverages, bottles, cans, cups or containers, irritants (e.g., noisemakers) or strobe lights. In addition, the facility may have additional restrictions on items that can be brought into the arena.

Well, while I’m somewhat disappointed to find out I can’t sneak a strobe light into any Big Ten stadium, it’s probably a fair trade off for the vuvuzelas.  You got to give a little to take a little, kids.
